Got a bunch of electronic parts and desperately need a way to inventory them? Worry no more! I’ve been working on a system meant just for that. You can organize your resistors, capacitors, microcontrollers, and whatever else in any way you want with the very customizable zParts. It is 100% free and 100% spyware and virus free as well!
If you like to keep track of your finances further than looking at your bank statement every month, and don’t want to pay to do it, consider using a free program called GnuCash.
GnuCash is good for a lot of different things. You can take care of stocks and mutual funds, print checks, schedule transactions and a whole bunch of stuff like that. However, I use it to keep my bank account balanced and to get monthly, quarterly, and yearly reports on my income and expenses. Basically, I use the account ledger and the reports. In doing this, I can see at the end of any time period what I spend my money on, and if I need to make adjustments to my spending habits.
GnuCash has an excellent register
There are a lot of things I like about this program. It was easy to set up a new account and get started. There are plenty of income and expense categories (and subcategories) predefined for you. If you need an extra one, it’s easy to add. The reports are very nice. I can choose dates and a decent amount of other custom options. There are several reports set up in advance, so I just use those with minor modifications.
GnuCash has a few less desirable qualities, but they aren’t really that big of a deal. I can’t figure out how to delete a category I made on accident. Granted, I haven’t looked that hard, but I wish it was easier. The reports don’t look all that great. It’s a very small graph with very little decoration. I just PDF all of my reports, so that could be the problem, but it shouldn’t matter.
Overall, a very nice program. It’s simple, quick, and lets me keep track of my finances. There are a couple of export options if I need them. Recommended.
Download it for Windows at SourceForge. It’s also available for Linux.
Learn how to clean up your Email inbox and be more productive with one hour talk. I tried it out with my work Email. If I need to keep an Email, it goes into a single Archive folder. I can search for it later. If it’s a task, I create a new task and delete the Email. The inbox remains as empty as possible.
